Cartier

Santos

35.1mm (small/medium) · 39.8mm (large)

The Cartier Santos holds a claim few watches can match: it is the world's first purpose-built men's wristwatch. In 1904, Louis Cartier created it for his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Brazilian aviation pioneer who needed to read the time during his pioneering flights without reaching into his pocket. The watch Santos-Dumont wore — a square case with visible screws on a leather strap — became the Santos de Cartier, a design so perfectly conceived that it remains in continuous production 120 years later. The current Santos is available in the large (ref. WSSA0018, 39.8mm) and small (ref. WSSA0009, 35.1mm) sizes, both in steel and two-tone steel/yellow gold, all featuring Cartier's QuickSwitch interchangeable strap system. This system — allowing the strap to be changed between leather, rubber, and metal bracelet in seconds without tools — is one of the most elegant mechanical convenience features in modern watchmaking. The Santos remains exceptionally versatile: at home in business meetings and weekend activities alike, its clean geometric dial and exposed-screw bezel give it personality without formality. Pre-owned Santos watches offer exceptional value relative to retail.

Buying Guide

How to buy a pre-owned Santos

01

Large versus medium — wrist size matters

Santos large (39.8mm) suits wrists 6.5" and up. Santos medium (35.1mm) is the unisex size and works on virtually any wrist. The medium is increasingly popular with male buyers who prefer subtle proportions. Try both before committing — the size difference significantly affects wrist presence.

02

QuickSwitch system doubles the watch's utility

Modern Santos (WSSA series) includes the QuickSwitch system — change between steel bracelet, leather, and rubber straps in seconds without tools. This dramatically extends the watch's wearability: bracelet for daily/business, leather for formal, rubber for active wear. Confirm all included straps are present pre-owned.

03

Two-tone is currently most popular

The two-tone steel/yellow gold (WSSA0029) is currently the most-requested Santos pre-owned, offering the prestige of gold detailing at a more accessible price than full gold. Trades $9,500–$11,500 with full set.

Sizing

Will the Santos fit your wrist?

Santos Large at 39.8mm with 47.0mm lug-to-lug fits wrists 6.5" and up. The square case wears slightly larger than its diameter due to the broad bezel. Santos Medium at 35.1mm fits virtually any wrist. The QuickSwitch bracelet allows fine micro-adjustment for comfort. Stack height of 8.83mm slips under most cuffs.
