What's the difference between factory and aftermarket diamond-set watches?

Factory: the diamonds were set by the manufacturer at original production, to published clarity/colour/cut specifications, in machined settings designed for those exact stones. Documented on the original warranty card. Aftermarket: the diamonds were set by an independent jeweller after the watch left the factory — different stone quality, often poorer settings, no factory documentation. Aftermarket setting voids the manufacturer warranty and significantly hurts resale value. We sell factory only.

Will the diamonds fall out?

Factory-set stones in claw or invisible settings are extremely secure — the manufacturer engineering ensures the stones survive normal wear for decades. We recommend a stone-tightness check during the regular service interval (every 7–10 years for modern Rolex), but stone loss on factory-set pieces is rare.

Do diamond-set watches hold value as well as standard references?

Factory diamond-set references from top brands (Rolex Day-Date, Patek Twenty~4, Cartier Tank Française with diamonds) hold value well, particularly in original-condition full sets with documentation. Aftermarket diamond-set pieces typically lose 20–30% versus the equivalent undecorated reference because the modification voids manufacturer warranty and limits the buyer pool.

How do I care for a diamond-set watch?

Clean the case and dial with a soft brush and warm water with a small amount of mild detergent — the diamonds will lose their lustre over time as oils accumulate in the settings. Avoid ultrasonic cleaning unless done by a professional with experience on the specific reference. Have a stone-tightness check at every regular service.

A diamond-set watch in our inventory is one with factory-fitted gemstones — set in the bezel, the dial, the lugs or the bracelet by the manufacturer at the time of original production. Factory-set stones are calibrated to specific clarity, colour and cut grades that the brand publishes; they sit in carefully machined claw or invisible settings; and their authenticity is documented on the original warranty card. Aftermarket diamond setting — done by an independent jeweller after the watch left the factory — is a different proposition entirely and we explicitly do not sell aftermarket-set pieces. The Rolex Datejust 36 with diamond bezel and dial markers, the Day-Date 36 with pavé dial in white or rose gold, and the Patek Philippe Twenty~4 in steel with diamond bezel are perennials. AP Royal Oak references with factory diamond bezels (15410ST, 15451ST) command meaningful premiums over their standard counterparts.
