Platinum is the rarest and densest of the watchmaking precious metals. 950 platinum (95% pure) weighs roughly twice as much as 18ct gold for the same case dimensions and reflects light with a cooler, more silver tone than white gold. Rolex's signature platinum reference is the Day-Date 40 ref. 228206 with its ice-blue dial — a colour palette permitted only on platinum cased Rolex models, which makes the platinum Day-Date instantly identifiable to those who know. Patek Philippe produces the Nautilus 5711/1P-001 in platinum with diamond hour markers, the rarest production Nautilus reference ever made. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in platinum is a similarly limited proposition. Beyond the metal value — significant in itself — platinum watches occupy the apex of the modern luxury market because production volumes are vanishingly small. These references typically command meaningful premiums to retail and are produced in such low numbers that the global secondary market is the realistic route to ownership.
