Royal Oak

37mm (15550) · 39mm (15202 Jumbo) · 41mm (15500/15510)

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is the most important watch of the 20th century. When Gérald Genta designed it overnight in 1972 — a stainless steel sports watch priced higher than most gold watches of the era — it shocked the industry and redefined luxury. Its eight-sided bezel with exposed screws, integrated bracelet with alternating brushed and polished surfaces, and Grande Tapisserie dial became an instant design language. Five decades later, those elements remain unchanged in their essentials, which is either a testament to Genta's genius or the ultimate example of a design that cannot be improved upon. The current Royal Oak lineup includes the 41mm Reference 15500ST (Calibre 4302, in-house automatic, 70-hour power reserve), the 39mm 'Jumbo' 15202 (Calibre 2121, ultra-thin, 40-hour power reserve), and the 37mm 15550 for smaller wrists. The 15202 'Jumbo' — closest in spirit to the original 1972 model — is arguably the most coveted of all Royal Oak references. AP produces approximately 50,000 pieces per year total across all models, making any Royal Oak genuinely scarce. Pre-owned examples regularly trade at or above retail for desirable references.

Buying Guide

How to buy a pre-owned Royal Oak

01

15500ST is the best entry to the Royal Oak line

The 15500ST in steel offers the modern Calibre 4302 (70hr power reserve) and the iconic Royal Oak design at $42,000–$50,000 pre-owned with full set. It's the most accessible Royal Oak and the most liquid in the secondary market.

02

Jumbo (15202/16202) is the connoisseur's choice

The 39mm 'Jumbo' references — discontinued 15202 with Calibre 2121 and current 16202 with Calibre 7121 — are the spiritual successors to the 1972 original. Slimmer profile, thinner movement, and stronger collector demand. Trades at significant premium over the 41mm references.

03

Verify bracelet stretch

Royal Oak bracelets — particularly older references — develop link stretch with age. Examine the bracelet by holding the clasp open and pressing each link transition. Significant play indicates stretch. Bracelet replacement at AP is expensive and slow — factor this into pre-owned pricing.

Sizing

Will the Royal Oak fit your wrist?

Royal Oak 41 (15500ST) at 47mm lug-to-lug fits wrists 6.5" and up. The 39mm Jumbo (15202/16202) fits virtually any wrist due to its slim profile (8.1mm). 37mm Royal Oak (15550) suits smaller wrists or those who prefer subtle proportions. Stack height of 10.4mm on 15500 slips under most cuffs but is more substantial than a Calatrava.
