Audemars Piguet

Royal Oak Concept

44mm–47mm

The Royal Oak Concept is Audemars Piguet's laboratory — a series of watches that abandons convention to showcase what AP's movement engineers and designers can achieve when freed from the constraints of commercial production. Launched in 2002 with a flying tourbillon and skeletonized movement visible through both sides of the case, the Concept has evolved into a series of technically radical objects including carbon fiber cases machined to tolerances of microns, flyback chronographs with titanium pushers, and gravity-defying movement architectures. The RD#1 Concept (26221FT) with its flying tourbillon and titanium/rubber case became the template for a generation of Concept watches. More recent references include the Black Panther Concept watch (26620IO.OO.D002CA.01) created in collaboration with Marvel Studios — one of the most extraordinary celebrity partnership watches ever produced. Each Concept reference is produced in extremely limited numbers, making them among the rarest watches AP makes. Pre-owned Concept pieces are avidly sought by serious collectors who appreciate both the engineering and the rarity.

Buying Guide

How to buy a pre-owned Royal Oak Concept

01

Concept is for serious collectors

Royal Oak Concept references are produced in tiny numbers (often 50–500 pieces total per reference) and trade in a small specialist market. They are not appropriate first AP purchases — collectors typically come to Concept after owning several Royal Oaks and Offshores.

02

Provenance is critical

Concept watches have small collector populations. Provenance — original ownership history, auction records, exhibition history — significantly affects value. Always verify documentation chain before purchase. Major auction houses provide robust provenance research as part of the sale process.

03

Service is specialist

Concept service must be performed at the AP manufacture in Le Brassus or at the brand's certified service centres. Service costs can exceed $10,000 and take 12+ months due to specialist movement components. Always verify recent service status.

Sizing

Will the Royal Oak Concept fit your wrist?

Royal Oak Concept references are predominantly 44–50mm with thicknesses 16–21mm. Suit wrists 7"+ minimum. The carbon and forged carbon versions wear significantly lighter than titanium or steel due to material density. Often paired with rubber straps for comfort during wear.
