Patek Philippe

Aquanaut

40.8mm (5167) · 42.2mm (5168)

Launched in 1997 — 21 years after the Nautilus — the Patek Philippe Aquanaut offers a younger, sportier aesthetic within the same integrated sports watch philosophy. Where the Nautilus features an octagonal porthole-inspired case and metal bracelet, the Aquanaut uses a rounded octagonal case and a bold composite strap, initially offered in rubber and later in the distinctive 'Tropical' coloration. The dial features a three-dimensional 'Tropics' embossing inspired by ship deck flooring, creating a tactile texture unique to the Aquanaut. Key references include the 5167A in stainless steel with olive brown strap and dial, the 5168G in white gold with khaki green dial and bracelet strap, and the 5167R in rose gold. Patek introduced the Travel Time variant (5164A, 5650G) which adds a second hour hand for a second time zone — an elegant complication for international travelers. The Aquanaut is water-resistant to 120 metres and features a fold-over clasp on the composite strap for secure water use. Secondary market premiums mirror those of the Nautilus: demand substantially exceeds production, and authenticated pre-owned examples command significant premiums over historical retail.

Buying Guide

How to buy a pre-owned Aquanaut

01

Steel 5167A is the gateway

The 5167A-001 in steel with black Tropic strap is the most accessible Aquanaut and currently the easiest to acquire pre-owned. It trades $55,000–$70,000 — significantly less than the equivalent Nautilus and offers similar Patek manufacturing quality.

02

5168G in white gold is the connoisseur's choice

The 5168G in 42.2mm white gold offers a more substantial wrist presence and is in white gold (a precious metal) for a similar price to a steel 5167A. Khaki green and night blue dials are particularly distinctive.

03

Travel Time is genuine utility

The 5164A Aquanaut Travel Time adds a fully-functional second-time-zone hand that can be advanced via pushers without affecting the main time. For international travellers, this is one of the most elegant complications in production.

Sizing

Will the Aquanaut fit your wrist?

Aquanaut 5167 at 40.8mm with 47mm lug-to-lug fits wrists 6.25" and up. The 5168G at 42.2mm needs 6.75"+ wrists. The composite strap is exceptionally comfortable in warm weather and comes with a folding clasp — different from the Nautilus's integrated bracelet aesthetic. Stack height of 8.1mm makes the 5167 one of the slimmest sports watches in production.
