Grand Complications

38mm–41mm (varies by reference and complication)

Patek Philippe's Grand Complications represent the absolute apex of watchmaking achievement — timepieces that combine multiple advanced complications such as perpetual calendars, minute repeaters, split-seconds chronographs, and tourbillons within a single wristwatch. These are among the most technically demanding objects humans manufacture, requiring months or years of hand-finishing by master watchmakers. The perpetual calendar (ref. 5270, 5320G) displays date, day, month, moon phase, and automatically accounts for months of different lengths — including February in both regular and leap years — through 2100. The minute repeater (ref. 5178, 5531R) chimes the hours, quarter hours, and minutes on demand through a sophisticated striking mechanism hidden within the case. The split-seconds chronograph (5370P) features two independently controllable chronograph hands for timing multiple events simultaneously. In the secondary market, Grand Complications are among the most valuable watches that exchange hands — museum-quality timepieces that few people in the world can afford new, making the pre-owned market the primary route to these extraordinary objects.

Buying Guide

How to buy a pre-owned Grand Complications

01

Service is non-negotiable

Grand Complications require service every 5–7 years at the manufacture. Service costs $5,000–$15,000+ depending on complication. Always verify service history and budget for upcoming service. A Grand Complication more than 6 years from last service should factor service into the purchase price.

02

Documentation is mandatory

On Grand Complications above $100,000, full set is non-negotiable: original Patek box, certificate of origin matching the case serial, hangtags, instruction booklet, and any service records. Watch-only Grand Complications are deeply discounted because they are difficult to authenticate and resell.

03

Stick to the manufacture for service

Independent watchmakers — even highly experienced ones — generally cannot service a Patek minute repeater or split-seconds chronograph to the manufacture's standard. Always service Grand Complications at the Patek Philippe manufacture in Geneva or via certified service centres.

Sizing

Will the Grand Complications fit your wrist?

Grand Complications references are typically 40–42mm with thicknesses ranging from 9 to 14mm. The 5370P split-seconds at 13.6mm thick is the most substantial. Most Grand Complications fit comfortably on 6.5"+ wrists. The 6300 Grandmaster Chime at 47mm requires 7.5"+ and is rarely worn for that reason.
