CurrentDatejust 41 Oystersteel smooth bezel
2017 — present
41mm Oystersteel, smooth bezel, Oyster bracelet. Various dial colours.
Introduced in 1945 to celebrate Rolex's 40th anniversary, the Datejust was the world's first self-winding waterproof chronometer with an automatically changing date. It remains the longest-running watch in Rolex's core collection and the brand's most versatile reference. The Datejust occupies the sweet spot between a formal dress watch and a capable everyday timepiece — Oyster-cased, Superlative Chronometer-certified, and available in a vast range of case metals, dial colours, and bracelet configurations. Current references include the Datejust 36 (ref. 126200, 126233, 126234) and the Datejust 41 (ref. 126300, 126334). The Jubilee bracelet — a five-piece link design invented specifically for the 1945 Datejust — remains the most popular bracelet option. Two-tone 'Rolesor' combinations pairing Oystersteel and 18ct Everose or yellow gold offer the look of precious metal at a more accessible price point. Pre-owned Datejust watches are among the most liquid in the market: their ubiquity means there is always demand from buyers at every level.

Buying Guide
01
Datejust 36 is the historically correct size and works on virtually any wrist. Datejust 41 is the modern preference for men's watches and accommodates the larger Calibre 3235. Try both before committing — the 36mm has a vintage charm the 41mm cannot replicate.
02
Fluted bezel (always white gold on steel cases) gives the Datejust a more formal, traditional appearance. Smooth bezel is more contemporary and sportier. Fluted typically commands a $500–$1,500 premium and ages better stylistically.
03
Datejust dials range from clean white Roman to elaborate diamond-set or 'Wimbledon' green. Standard dials hold value better long-term; exotic dials may appeal to specific buyers but limit resale audience. The 'Wimbledon' green and slate grey dials are currently most popular pre-owned.
Sizing
Datejust 36 fits wrists from 5.5" to 7.5" comfortably — the most universally wearable size in the Rolex catalogue. Datejust 41 suits wrists 6.25" and up. The Jubilee bracelet drapes more comfortably than Oyster but requires more frequent cleaning. Stack height of 11.5–11.9mm slips under any cuff. The Crownclasp on Jubilee is more secure than older Fliplock systems.
Compare
Day-Date is the precious-metal-only senior sibling to the Datejust. Same Oyster case lineage, but Day-Date adds the day-of-week display and is exclusively in 18ct gold or platinum. Datejust offers steel and two-tone options the Day-Date never has.
Yacht-Master shares the Oyster case family but adds a bidirectional rotatable bezel for nautical use. Datejust is the dress-sports watch; Yacht-Master is the sports-luxury alternative.
Submariner is the dive-watch sport sibling. Datejust shares 41mm DNA but with smooth or fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet option, positioning it as a dress-sports versus a tool watch.
