Submariner

41mm (current 126610 generation) · 40mm (116610 generation)

The Rolex Submariner is the world's most recognizable dive watch and the benchmark against which every sports watch is measured. Introduced in 1953 as the first watch water-resistant to 100 metres, it evolved in lockstep with professional diving, eventually achieving a 300-metre depth rating and the now-iconic Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert. The current generation — the reference 126610 in 41mm — houses the Calibre 3235 movement, which is accurate to +2/-2 seconds per day and offers a 70-hour power reserve. The two principal references are the 126610LN (black dial and bezel, often called the 'sub no-date') and the 126610LV (black dial with green Cerachrom bezel, nicknamed the 'Kermit'). Both command significant premiums in the secondary market, driven by perpetual demand that far outstrips Rolex's production. The previous-generation 40mm models — references 116610LN and 116610LV — remain extremely popular for collectors who prefer the slightly smaller case. Buying pre-owned means acquiring a fully authenticated timepiece at a genuine market price, without multi-year boutique waitlists.

Buying Guide

How to buy a pre-owned Submariner

01

Decide on date or no-date first

The 126610LN (date) and 124060 (no-date) are mechanically nearly identical but visually distinct. Date adds Cyclops magnification and quick-set practicality; no-date offers cleaner dial symmetry. The no-date typically trades $1,000–$1,500 less.

02

Prefer 126610 generation over 116610

The 2020+ 126610 has a 70-hour power reserve, better lume, and a slightly larger 41mm case — but trades at a $2,500–$4,000 premium over the 116610. If you wear the watch daily, the newer generation is worth the premium.

03

Polish-state matters

Submariner cases that have been heavily polished show rounded edges where the brushed top of the lug should meet the polished side at a sharp 90-degree angle. Original case geometry adds significant value over re-polished examples.

Sizing

Will the Submariner fit your wrist?

The Submariner wears slightly larger than its 41mm diameter due to the broad ceramic bezel and Maxi case dimensions. Lug-to-lug of 47.6mm fits wrists 6.5" and up comfortably; on a 6" wrist the lugs may overhang slightly. The Glidelock clasp allows fine micro-adjustment for wrist swell during the day. Total wrist presence is closer to a 42mm watch from another brand. Stack height of 12.5mm slips under most shirt cuffs.
