Buyer's Comparison
VC Overseas vs Patek Nautilus
The Vacheron Constantin Overseas and the Patek Philippe Nautilus are two interpretations of the same fundamental brief — a Geneva-made luxury integrated-bracelet sports watch — and the choice between them is one of the most contentious in modern collecting. The Nautilus (1976) is the more famous: Genta-designed, porthole case, integrated steel bracelet, the most photographed watch of the past decade. The Overseas (1996, redesigned 2016) is the Vacheron Constantin response: a six-sided Maltese cross-inspired bezel, integrated bracelet with quick-change strap system (steel bracelet, leather and rubber straps included), and the Calibre 5100 in-house automatic movement. Both bear the Geneva Seal. Both are made by 200+ year old Geneva manufactures. The Nautilus 5711/1A trades $90,000–$140,000; the Overseas 4500V in steel trades $30,000–$45,000. The Overseas costs roughly a third as much as the Nautilus while delivering objectively comparable movement quality and a more practical strap system. The Nautilus has the cultural status; the Overseas has the value-for-money.
