How do you decide what counts as 'excellent' versus 'good'?

Excellent: original case geometry intact, light hairline scratches only, no dents or dings, sharp dial and hands, recently serviced or running within manufacturer tolerance, water resistance tested. Good: case may have been lightly polished, some visible wear marks, possibly a small ding on a lug or bezel, dial and movement still original and clean, may need service in the next 1–2 years. We do not sell anything below 'excellent' — pieces that fail our excellent grade are sold at trade.

Is an excellent-condition watch as good as a like-new one?

For wearing, mostly yes — and at meaningful savings. The visible difference between excellent and like-new is roughly the difference between a watch that has been worn 50 times and one that has been worn 5 times. Both deliver the same ownership experience day to day. Like-new commands a premium primarily because of resale liquidity, not functional difference.

How much should I save buying excellent vs. unworn?

Typically 15–25% on modern Rolex sport references (a $13,500 unworn Submariner sells around $11,000–$12,000 in excellent condition with full set). The savings are smaller on Patek Philippe and AP, where condition pricing compresses around the desirability of the reference itself.

Will I need to service an excellent-condition watch sooner than a like-new one?

Possibly. Modern Rolex movements are factory-rated for 7–10 year service intervals. We disclose service history where known and time the watch on arrival to confirm it runs within tolerance. If the watch is approaching the service interval and the original owner cannot confirm a recent service, we either price the service into the listing or sell with a service credit. An excellent piece shows light wear marks on close inspection: hairline scratches on the case and bracelet, possibly a few tiny dings on a brushed surface, but with the original case geometry intact (no excessive polishing) and the dial and hands undamaged. The watch runs accurately, water resistance has been recently tested, and the movement is in clean serviceable condition. Box and papers may or may not be included; we disclose explicitly. Many of our most repeat customers buy at this grade exclusively — a Daytona or Submariner in excellent condition delivers the entire ownership experience at a meaningfully lower price than an unworn or like-new equivalent. The savings versus unworn pricing typically run 15–25% on modern Rolex sport references and 10–15% on Patek and AP.
